<strong>Canadian Countertenor awarded Canada Council Virginia Parker Prize</strong>

<em>Ottawa, June 7, 2012</em> – The 2012 Virginia Parker Prize has been awarded to rising classical singer Daniel Cabena. The Canada Council for the Arts today announced that the countertenor is the recipient of the $25,000 prize, established in 1982 by music lover Virginia Parker and funded by an annual donation from the Virginia Parker Foundation. The award is for Canadian classical musicians under the age of 32 who demonstrate outstanding talent and musicianship.

“Daniel Cabena is part of a new generation of artists helping to put Canada on the world stage,” said Robert Sirman, Canada Council Director and CEO. “The Canada Council’s Virginia Parker Prize recognizes Daniel’s achievements as a singer of great expressive power and will help to assure the brilliant career that lies ahead.”

Daniel Cabena was selected by a Canada Council peer assessment committee composed of Valdine Anderson, Jacques Boucher and Daniel Gress.

The peer assessment committee members made the following comments: “The voice of Daniel Cabena is pure and he devotes considerable energy to detail. His singing is relaxed and natural. He has impeccable style and the intelligence of his musical thought is apparent, as is his musical curiosity. The artist’s desire to enrich the repertoire for countertenors is commendable.”

Daniel Cabena will use the funds from the Virginia Parker Prize towards two goals: the continuation of his interpretive work into a wider repertoire and the continued exploration of his professional possibilities in Canada and Europe.

<h4>Overview</h4>
Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, former Queen of France, and claimant to the throne of England, is held prisoner by her cousin Queen Elizabeth I. Will Mary's attempts to cajole Elizabeth into a reconciliation save her from being beheaded?

Donizetti takes shameless liberties with history, but imparts a splendid operatic flair to the political and religious conflict between Mary and Elizabeth. So what if the feuding monarchs never met in real life! Donizetti brings them together anyway, concocts a love triangle, and lets the sparks fly. As the niceties of diplomacy go out the window, the confrontation erupts into some very un-royal language and the most lyrical catfight in all of opera.

<em>Maria Stuarda</em> brings us two indomitable heroines and a wonderfully Italian twist on British history – Shakespearian invective hurled in purest bel canto, hatred and scorn spun into silken, sinuous melody – magnificent drama and ethereal music.

<em>Two women locked in conflict over one of the world's most powerful empires . . . their lives interwoven in a passionate and painful struggle for political power.</em>

<h4 align="center">LITTLE OPERA THEATRE OF NY PRESENTS TRAVELERS: TWO ONE-ACT RARITIES BY GUSTAV HOLST: THE WANDERING SCHOLAR AND SĀVITRI</h4>
NEW YORK, NY—<a href="http://www.lotny.org/"><strong>The Little Opera Theatre of NY</strong></a> announces its main spring 2012 production entitled <strong><em>Travelers</em></strong>, featuring two rarely performed one-act operas by Gustav Holst: <strong><em>The Wandering Scholar</em></strong> and <strong><em>Sāvitri.</em></strong> Performances take place <strong>May 10 and 11, 8 pm; May 12, 2 pm and 8 pm; and May 13, 3 pm, at </strong><a href="http://www.59e59.org/"><strong>59E59Theaters</strong></a> (59 East 59th Street, between Park and Madison Avenues). <strong>Tickets for<em>Travelers </em>are available beginning April 2 and are $35.</strong> Tickets can be purchased online: TicketCentral.com; by phone: 212-279-4200/212-279-4200; or at the 59E59 Theaters Box Office.

The production is directed by <strong>Philip Shneidman</strong>, conducted by <strong>Richard Cordova</strong>, with set design by award-winning designer <strong>Neil Patel</strong>, costume design by <strong>Lara de Bruijn</strong>, and lighting design by <strong>Natalie Robin</strong> and <strong>Amanda Clegg Lyon</strong>. The cast for <em>The Wandering Scholar</em> features <strong>Ron Loyd</strong>, baritone (Louis), <strong>Sharin Apostolou/Maria Alu</strong>, sopranos (Alison, evening/matinee); <strong>Jeffrey Tucker</strong>, bass (Father Philippe); and <strong>Benjamin Robinson</strong>, tenor (Pierre, the scholar). The cast of<em>Sāvitri</em> features <strong>Rufus Müller</strong>, tenor (Satyavān); <strong>Heather Johnson/Toby Newman</strong>, mezzo-sopranos (<em>Sāvitri</em>, evening/matinee); and TBD (Death).

Gustav Holst (1874-1934) a British composer most famous for his orchestral score <em>The Planets</em> left in fact a much larger musical legacy. With libretto by Clifford Bax, <em>The Wandering Scholar</em>, Op.50 is based on the book <em>The Wandering Scholars</em> by Helen Waddell. The actual story of <em>The Wandering Scholar is</em> a comedy about a young wife, a priest, a traveling scholar; and what the husband finds when he returns home.

The opera received its premiere on January 13, 1934 at the David Lewis Theatre in Liverpool, but Holst – too ill to attend – never heard a live performance of the opera. The opera’s original manuscript had notes indicating that composer had intended to revise parts of the work, but he died before any changes could be made. Benjamin Britten later prepared a chamber version of the opera which premiered in 1951; in 1968 Britten and the composer’s daughter, Imogen Holst, edited a copy for publication.

Dating from 1908, <em>Sāvitri</em>, Op. 25, features a libretto by the composer, and is taken from the episode from the <em>Mahābhārata</em>. The composer translated the story from Sanskrit himself. The myth of <em>Sāvitri</em> revolves around Sāvitri and Satyavān alone together in the woods, and their encounter with the god of death. This one-act opera is performed in one movement and without an overture. At the time of its composition, it was considered revolutionary as it involved only three characters and the chamber orchestra of twelve musicians. In many ways, <em>Sāvitri</em>, is the precursor to the work of Benjamin Britten and the English Opera Group later in the century.

Imogen Holst wrote the preface to the published score. She noted that her father had suggested that if a prelude was needed, one of the hymns from his <em>Choral Hymns of the Rig Veda</em>, would help establish the appropriate atmosphere. LOTNY’s production of <strong>Travelers </strong>will incorporate that work as an interlude between the two principal works.

<a href="http://www.lotny.org/" target="_blank"><strong>The Little Opera Theatre of NY</strong></a><strong> (LOTNY)</strong> is a chamber opera company that was founded in September of 2004 with a concert at The Kosciuszko Foundation. Last spring, LOTNY presented the New York Stage premiere of Mozart’s youthful opera, <em>Mitridate, re di Ponto</em> to sold-out houses, and received widespread press coverage. John Yohalem from <em>Parterre Box</em> commented, “it was a treat to see it [Mitridate] in an imaginative and well-paced production by LOTNY…” <em>The New York Time</em>s noted the production featured “dazzling arias aplenty” and “fine performances”. Previous seasons have included the U.S. premiere of César Cui’s <em>A Feast in the Time of the Plague</em> with Nikolay Rimsky-Korsakov’s <em>Mozart &amp; Salieri</em>in a double-billed program entitled <em>2 Little Tragedies of Pushkin</em>. The LOTNY repertory began with Mozart’s <em>La Finta Giardiniera</em>, and has expanded to include Virgil Thomson and Gertrude Stein’s opera, <em>The Mother of Us All</em>. Concert presentations have included: <em>Make Believe, </em>the music of Jerome Kern,<em> The Bohemians, </em>music of Giacomo Puccini;<em> </em>both presented at Socrates Sculpture Park as part of the city wide September Concert for 9/11. Work with living composers include the recent production of Inessa Zaretsky’s <em>Man in a Black Coat </em>as part of Target Margin’s Last Futurist Lab at The Bushwick Starr.

<strong>Richard Cordova</strong> (Conductor) was recently appointed Music Director of the Little Opera Theatre of New York following his success as conductor for LOTNY’s New York stage Premiere of Mozart’s <em>Mitridate, Re di Ponto</em>. Mr. Cordova made his professional conducting debut leading the Scandinavian Premiere of Bernstein’s<em>Candide</em> in Bergen, Norway, and has subsequently conducted productions for Oper der Stadt Bonn, Opera North (New Hampshire), Sarasota Opera, Opera Company of Boston, Long Beach Opera, Berkshire Opera, Florida Grand Opera and Baltimore Opera. He has served as Music Director for both Julie Taymor’s <em>Juan Darien</em> during its initial off-Broadway inception (later conducting the work during its Tony Award nominated run at Lincoln Center Theater during the 1996-97 season); and earlier for Music-Theater Group’s groundbreaking off-Broadway production of Virgil Thomson’s <em>The Mother of Us All</em>, an opera he later conducted more often than any other living conductor. As a pianist, he has collaborated with such artists as Martina Arroyo, Frederica von Stade, Renato Bruson, Florence Quivar and Julia Migenes, and has worked in this capacity for several major opera companies around the world. For the past eighteen years, he has toured internationally with various productions of Gershwin’s <em>Porgy and Bess</em>, conducting the work on four continents. He continues long standing artistic associations with both Des Moines Metro Opera and Sarasota Opera, having held various titles with the latter organization including that of Program and Music Director for the Studio Artists.

Mr. Ramirez comes back to us celebrating his most recent success in France where he boldly embodied the role of <em>Nemorino</em> in L’ELISIR D’AMORE with Opera Angers-Nantes.  <strong>Rómulo Delgado</strong>, also of Mexican background returns to us from Vienna after a rousing triumph as <em>Don José</em> in CARMEN. Colombian soprano <strong>Margie Bernal</strong> will complete a roster of artists that will also include General Director <strong>Guillermo Silva-Marin</strong>, for a stupendous musical matinee under Music Director and Pianist <strong>Raisa Nakhmanovich</strong>.

&nbsp;

Excerpts from the Cuban zarzuelas CECILIA VALDES by Gonzalo Roig, MARIA LA O by Ernesto Lecuona will mingle with those from LA TEMPRANICA by G. Giménez, EL BARBERILLO DE LAVAPIES by Federico Barbieri, LA TABERNERA DEL PUERTO by Pablo Sorozabal, LOS GAVILANES by José Guerrro and many more.

&nbsp;

ZARZUELA GOLD will be immediately followed by a President’s Reception hosted by TOT Board of Director’s President <strong>Zofia Hall</strong> right on the premises of the St. Lawrence Centre for the Arts attended by His Excellency <strong>Don Francisco Pascual de la Parte</strong>, our artists, TOT Friends and special guests.

<td><span>25th annual Jazz Festival wraps</span><span>By STEPHEN PEDERSEN</span>
<span>Sun, Jul 17 - 5:23 PM</span>
<div>

&nbsp;

The sun shone, the wind blew, the rains came and went, but none of it slowed down the 2011 TD Halifax Jazz Festival, or dimmed the brilliance of it's biggest star attraction: the new site in a vast parking lot on the Halifax waterfront.

“It has gone better than we could possible have imagined,” said Artistic Director Laura 'Lulu' Healy Saturday afternoon, interviewed not quite out of ear-shot of the  performance going on inside the main stage Festival Tent by 18 participants in the Creative Music Workshop.

“We've heard nothing but positive feedback about the location and the tent and the sound. Weather hasn't seemed to affect us,” said Healy. “If it was sunny we might have bigger crowds, but we still had many, many people on site every day, because the tent is so much bigger and when the flaps are down, it's nice and warm in there — you don't really notice that it's foggy outside.”

Nearly 600 people filled the tent, but more seats surrounded the tent on three sides, with even more space for people to stroll around. Healy estimated 1,500 were on site at peak moments.

Friday night, with Colombia's LA-33 on stage, and mambo horns and rhythms in the air, Healy, after checking other venues from most of the evening, came on to the wind-blown site at 10:30 p.m.

“Everybody in the entire parking lot was dancing and it and it looked like even the posters were dancing,” Healy said. “People were dancing outside the tent, on the sides, over by the washrooms, in the back, and everywhere everybody and the posters were just bobbing back and forth.”

Earlier that evening, in St. Matthew's United Church, there was no dancing but much listening as bass-clarinetist Jeff Reilly improvised over string-quartet and piano, all playing in the holy minimalistic
style popularized by Sanctuary's core trio of clarinet (Reilly), cello (Christoph Both), and organ (Peter Togni).

The highlight of the concert was the powerful voice and expressive artistry of mezzo-soprano Andrea Ludwig singing Peter Togni's setting of a poem by Russian poet Osip Mandelstam, a victim of Josef Stalin's totalitarian rule.

Saturday's free afternoon at the tent featured big bands from Halifax (the Tuesday Night Big Band) and the Annapolis Valley (Big Valley Swing Orchestra) followed by Scott Macmillan's Scott 'n' The Rocks,
and ended with the Creative Music Workshop.

A few couples jitterbugged on the side to the sounds of swing, while in front of the stage a handful of young children danced and ran about excitedly to the peppery rhythms of Scott 'n' the Rocks, while one little girl endlessly cart-wheeled around the space.

Children's programming at the Festival included three musical workshops and cruises around the harbour on Theodore Tugboat. “We sold out every single one of them,” said Healy. “They went out in the rain one day and the children were using their hands as instruments and screaming.”

When asked what the Jazzfest would do differently next year, “More children's programming,” she said.

“I would also have a rain-date for the parade. It rained and it was too late to arrange another date because you have to block off the street and get special permission. We really missed the parade — it was one of the (25th anniversary) celebratory events.”

Healy agrees with most people festival staffers have talked to that the Preservation Hall Jazz Band show last Sunday was the best show they have ever seen.

“We had more people on the tent site than we have ever had in the history of the Festival,” Healy said. “I don't have the exact numbers, but we filled up every chair, and with many people walking around and the VIP area we had more than 1,500 people.”

She was also happy with the local musicians playing in the festival this year. The Back Alley Big Band, who opened for Preservation Hall, was stellar, she said.

“We have so many amazing musicians in this area. It's really great to hear people saying, 'Who's this band? Where are they from?'. Well, they're from here, they play all the time—people were shocked, that's how awesome they were.”

Sylvio Pupo's late night show in the Lord Nelson Hotel's Georgian Lounge was packed Friday night, Healy reported. And one local trumpet player, Matt Myer (Gypsophilia) had 14 or 15 gigs at the Festival she said.

She summed up by saying, “I am just really so overwhelmingly excited about the site. I love looking around and seeing sailboats go by. I love the tent. It's calming. As soon as you walk in here, it's like 'Ah'!”

“I hope we can be here for a really long time.”

<h2>
<div>NEW YORK CITY</div>
<div>Kent Tritle &amp; Musica Sacra</div>
<div>2/23/11</div></h2>
<span>H</span>andel's <em>Israel in Egypt</em> shares several characteristics with his ubiquitous masterpiece <em>Messiah</em>: both works are Biblical oratorios in English, scored for chorus and soloists. However, while <em>Messiah</em> features numerous star solo turns that contrast sharply with the choral movements, <em>Israel in Egypt</em> finds the role of the soloists drastically reduced, with extended stretches of choral singing the norm. Handel compensated for this focal shift in the latter work by substantially varying the choral writing in both mood and texture; the choruses based on the Plagues of Egypt are particularly vivid in this regard, as they successfully strive to create distinct "pictures" of the plagues through purely musical means. Because of the substantial demands made of the choral forces, however, a performance of the work cannot be truly satisfying without a superb chorus to sing it.

Musica Sacra's February 23 presentation of <em>Israel in Egypt </em>at Carnegie Hall was given in two parts (Handel's original version consisted of three parts), preceded by the overture from Handel's <em>Solomon</em>.<em> </em>The thirty-two-voice chorus produced a polished, even sound across its four/eight parts (many of the choruses are scored for double choir), with tight ensemble and crisp diction. Highlights included a deliciously playful realization of the plague of flies and lice; still, glassy vocalism depicting darkness covering the land; and the aurally convincing drowning of Pharaoh's army in the Red Sea. The rapid-fire choral coloratura in the final movement was exemplary in its speed, accuracy and synchronicity. One downside throughout the performance, however, was the somewhat underpowered soprano section. Though ethereal in the often stratospherically high tessitura and beautifully blended as a group, these ten ladies were unable to produce an adequately powerful sound for the work's climactic moments. This deficiency was also noticeable in long phrases with held notes, when the section often maxed out too soon in volume, with no reserve for further crescendo.

The evening's six soloists were strong overall. Soprano Leslie Fagan sang effortlessly, with clear, shimmering tone, while chorus member Kathryn Lewek — filling in on short notice for ailing soprano Jamet Pittman — added her round, sensuous voice to Fagan's in a gorgeous duet, the two voices blending together ideally in both color and artistry. Also first-rate in an extensive duet was bass Kevin Deas, who possesses a beautifully even and controlled voice of velvety richness. Partnering him was baritone Tyler Duncan, singing vigorously but perhaps a bit too much so; his sound occasionally lost its resonance and flattened out. Deep-voiced mezzo-soprano Charlotte Daw Paulsen seemed challenged by her relentlessly low-lying music; her timbre took on a rather murky quality as it attempted to fill Carnegie's expanse in such a low range. Light-voiced tenor Oliver Mercer looked apprehensive and uncomfortable onstage; his singing lacked both authority in the narrative recitatives and vocal depth in the tenor aria.

Kent Tritle conducted energetically, with clear, often poetic gestures, but there were times when he seemed to be asking for more volume than the modest-sized chorus could provide. The orchestra's spirited, fine-tuned playing was first-rate. <img title="spacer" src="http://www.operanews.com/uploadedImages/sample_folder/MOG-ON-spacer.jpg" alt="MOG ON spacer Leslie Fagan, Israel in Egypt, NYC " />
